I maakte een mixtape in 2016 waar de muziek klinkt alsof het uit een andere kamer komt. Ik heb de bandnamen niet in de juiste volgorde staan, maar hij bestaat uit. Catharsis, Cult of Youth, Dragged into Sunlight, Joy Division, Kickback, King Dude, MGLA, Today is the Day en Warsaw.

Daan Gielis’ (°1988) work explores the conflicts and contradictions in the emotional, communicative and social systems that together make up the world as we know it: happiness and sadness coinciding, a frustration of desire that only triggers new desire, an underground culture that stays authentic while selling out…
Each of these systems is riddled by contradiction. And yet, precisely because of those internal contradictions these systems thrive, contrasting feelings feed off of each other, setting in motion a never-ending cyclical process from which no escape seems possible. No wonder then that so many of us are emotionally conflicted about present reality, struggling to find consistency.
Gielis documents that struggle. Taking his own conflicting experiences and sentiments as a starting point, he registrates mutually exclusive feelings that contradict each other while also keeping each other alive. Searching for consistency – and perhaps even for a way out of the contradictory world we live in – will not be an easy task, Gielis’ work suggests. The work assures us that there will be no simple solutions.

wereld zoals wij die kennen: geluk en verdriet die samenvallen, een frustratie van verlangen die enkel nieuw verlangen uitlokt, een underground cultuur die authentiek blijft terwijl ze uitverkopen...
Elk van deze systemen is doorspekt met tegenstrijdigheden. En toch, juist vanwege...
deze interne tegenstrijdigheden gedijen deze systemen, contrasterende gevoelens voeden...
en zetten een nooit eindigend cyclisch proces in gang... geen ontsnapping mogelijk lijkt. Geen wonder dus dat zo velen van ons emotioneel.. tegenstrijdig zijn over de huidige realiteit, worstelend om consistentie te vinden.
Gielis documenteert die strijd. Met zijn eigen tegenstrijdige ervaringen en gevoelens als uitgangspunt, registreert hij gevoelens die elkaar uitsluiten, elkaar tegenspreken en elkaar tegelijkertijd in leven houden. Het zoeken naar consistentie - en misschien zelfs naar een uitweg uit de tegenstrijdige wereld waarin we leven - zal geen gemakkelijke opgave zijn, suggereert Gielis' werk. Het werk verzekert ons dat er geen eenvoudige oplossingen zullen zijn.
