When thinking of Arcadia, I refuse to think in terms of status and the luxury that it comes with. That notion of Arcadian peace is centuries old. It dates back to days where western societies were much smaller and very few enjoyed these aspects of freedom. The way I approach Arkadia is in terms of internal/external balance. External influences are nature, both the constructed human one as well as the nature that exists "a priori" and which we were once fully embedded in.
While working on the recording, I traveled from a metropolis to a smaller city, closer to "nature". The bliss is to find calm amidst a variety of outer circumstances by correctly aligning to those from within. Whether I imitate animals or sing to counterbalance outer noise - it is these tiny moments of awareness that bring happiness to life.

Wenn ich an Arkadien denke, weigere ich mich, in Begriffen von Status und dem damit verbundenen Luxus zu denken. Diese Vorstellung von arkadischer Ruhe ist Jahrhunderte alt. Sie stammt aus einer Zeit, in der die westlichen Gesellschaften viel kleiner waren und nur wenige diese Aspekte der Freiheit genossen. Die Art und Weise, wie ich mich Arkadia nähere, ist im Sinne eines inneren/äußeren Gleichgewichts. Äußere Einflüsse sind die Natur, sowohl die konstruierte menschliche als auch die Natur, die "a priori" existiert und in die wir einst vollständig eingebettet waren.
Während der Arbeit an der Aufnahme reiste ich von einer Metropole in eine kleinere Stadt, näher an der "Natur". Die Glückseligkeit besteht darin, inmitten einer Vielzahl äußerer Umstände Ruhe zu finden, indem ich mich von innen her richtig auf diese ausrichte. Ob ich nun Tiere imitiere oder singe, um den äußeren Lärm auszugleichen - es sind diese winzigen Momente der Bewusstheit, die das Glück ins Leben bringen.

Born and raised behind the iron curtain and growing up in Western Germany, Elisabeth Ajtay is a conceptual artist primarily working in photography. Her work reflects and questions western culture on a psychological level with themes related to advertising, technology and the notion of home. Her multi-facetted practice is a reflection on her translation from growing up in, and, constantly moving between two different systems.
Ajtay's work is in numerous private collections. She has exhibited throughout Europe and in the US, including inSPIRACJE and Art Moves Festival in Poland, Goethe Institutes in Morocco, Prague, New York and France. Museum shows include the MKK -Museum for Art and Cultural History Dortmund, Germany and Blue Star Contemporary in San Antonio, Texas. The Ministry of Education and Training of North Rhine-Westphalia is working with her series “Zuhause/At Home” for educational purposes, encouraging discussions about the notion of belonging and nationality. She has received a honorable mention with PX3-Prix de la Photographie Paris, France and has been nominated a semi-finalist at the Photofestival Groningen, Netherlands and the Immigration/Emigration Residency at the Santa Fe Art Institute in Santa Fe, NM. She was included into the Prequalified Artist Pool by the San Francisco Arts Commission and awarded a residency at the 3rd Street Studio Programs by San Francisco Art Institute. In 2016, she has exhibited with Alter Space, RAYKO and Savernack Street in San Francisco, CA. She was awarded an artist in residence at BANFF Center for Arts and Culture in Canada and the Vermont Studio Center and she received two honorable mentions with the International Photography awards. Most recently she was nominated a finalist for the 2020 Hopper Prize.

Geboren und aufgewachsen hinter dem eisernen Vorhang und aufgewachsen in Westdeutschland, ist Elisabeth Ajtay eine konzeptionelle Künstlerin, die hauptsächlich im Bereich der Fotografie arbeitet. Ihre Arbeit reflektiert und hinterfragt die westliche Kultur auf einer psychologischen Ebene mit Themen, die mit Werbung, Technologie und der Vorstellung von Heimat zu tun haben.
