Lockdown brought unexpected peace to my life. I realise that I live in the countryside: I'd only looked at the boringness of living in a suburb on the edge of London, not really in the city that I faced every day. I turned my head the other way, and there was a huge green space as far as the eye could see. This is one of the walks I took in which I revisit the one-off appearance of a rare bird, very shortly after the death of a close musical associate.

Lockdown bracht onverwachte rust in mijn leven. Ik realiseer me dat ik op het platteland woon op het platteland: ik had alleen gekeken naar de saaiheid van het leven in een buitenwijk aan aan de rand van Londen, niet echt in de stad waar ik elke dag voor stond. Ik draaide mijn hoofd hoofd de andere kant op, en daar was een enorme groene ruimte zo ver als het oog kon kon zien. Dit is een van de wandelingen die ik maakte waarin ik de eenmalige verschijning van een zeldzame vogel, kort na de dood van een naaste muzikale medewerker.

In the 1980s Helen’s bands The Chefs and Helen and the Horns were regulars on BBC’s John Peel show. After taking a 25 year break to raise a family, she returned to the stage as a solo artist, also collaborating with artists such as Lester Square, Gina Birch, Martin Stephenson, Vic Godard and the Austrian artist Robert Rotifer. She plays electric guitar and sings her own compositions, sometimes wry observations on current news and political events and sometimes much more personal in nature. BBC6’s Gideon Coe is a fan, and Radio London’s Gary Crowley chose her song A Good Life with a Bad Apple as his track of the week.

In de jaren tachtig waren Helens bands The Chefs en Helen and the Horns regelmatig te zien in de John Peel show van de BBC. Na een onderbreking van 25 jaar om een gezin te stichten, keerde ze terug naar het podium als soloartieste, en werkte ze ook samen met artiesten als Lester Square, Gina Birch, Martin Stephenson, Vic Godard en de Oostenrijkse artiest Robert Rotifer. Ze speelt elektrische gitaar en zingt haar eigen composities, soms wrange observaties van de actualiteit en politieke gebeurtenissen en soms veel persoonlijker van aard. Gideon Coe van BBC6 is een fan, en Gary Crowley van Radio London koos haar nummer A Good Life with a Bad Apple als zijn nummer van de week.
