'Donatus subaqua crescendo' is a field sound recording of mine from 1998. It was recorded underwater in Lake Donatus close to Cologne. It was made like an underwater trip at sunrise, with all the plants starting to produce oxygen getting louder and louder with the up-rising light of the sun. Is that our future?

"Donatus subaqua crescendo" is een veld geluidsopname van mij uit 1998. Hij werd onder water opgenomen in het Donatusmeer bij Keulen. Het werd gemaakt als een onderwaterreis bij zonsopgang, met alle planten die zuurstof beginnen te produceren die luider en luider worden met het opkomende licht van de zon. Is dat onze toekomst?

The Cologne artist Klaus Osterwald combines three-dimensional pictorial aspects with sound worlds and thus creates the possibility of visualising auditory data. In the representation of various acoustic templates, Osterwald works with a wide variety of materials. In view of his diverse production, the viewer might get the impression that he is dealing with several artists.
Osterwald is fine with this view; he leaves a group of works before it has been worked out to the last detail, because routine, by his own admission, makes him restless. Instead, he focuses on achieving his own artistic coherence and recognisability not in the aesthetic but in the conceptual approach.
Born in Oldenburg in 1946, he studied at the Folkwangschule für Gestaltung in Essen from 1970 to 1975. In 1982-1983 he received the Wilhelm Lehmbruck Scholarship in Duisburg and in 1993 he went to Cuba for three months on a scholarship from the Ludwig Foundation for Art and International Understanding. This was followed in 1997 by another three-month scholarship from the Research Institute for Inter-Culture in Seoul, South Korea. In 2002 and 2005 he worked extensively with ceramics in 's Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands, on scholarships from the Europea Ceramic Workcentre. In the course of an artist exchange, a scholarship followed from the Universidad El Bosque in Bogotá and at the same time from the Universidad Nacionál de Colombia, Bogotá.

De Keulse kunstenaar Klaus Osterwald combineert driedimensionale picturale aspecten met geluidswerelden en creëert zo de mogelijkheid van het visualiseren van auditieve gegevens te visualiseren. Bij de weergave van verschillende akoestische sjablonen werkt Osterwald me een grote verscheidenheid aan materialen. Gezien zijn veelzijdige productie zou de toeschouwe de indruk kunnen krijgen dat hij met meerdere kunstenaars te maken heeft.
Osterwald vindt dit prima; hij verlaat een groep werken voordat deze tot in de puntjes is uitgewerkt, want routine maakt hem, zo geeft hij zelf to rusteloos maakt. In plaats daarvan richt hij zich op het bereiken van een eigen artistieke samenhang e en herkenbaarheid, niet in de esthetiek maar in de conceptuele benadering.
