In 1992 I bought an old wooden house boat called Artemis. My father had died unexpectedly and left me a small amount of money. With this money I did two things, I enrolled on an MA in feminist art history, and I bought a boat.
1990s Britain was, in retrospect, an optimistic decade, it seemed to us all I think, that things were finally moving forward. The horror of AIDS and the legacy of the Thatcher years were starting to fade, and in their place we had shell suits, mobile phones, Tracey Emin and Sarah Lucas, and the Spice Girls.

In 1992 kocht ik een oude houten woonboot genaamd Artemis. Mijn vader was onverwacht overleden en had me een klein beetje geld nagelaten. Met dat geld deed ik twee dingen: ik schreef me in voor een MA in feministische kunstgeschiedenis, en ik kocht een boot.
Groot-Brittannië van de jaren '90 was, achteraf gezien, een optimistisch decennium, het leek ons allemaal, denk ik, dat de dingen eindelijk vooruit gingen. Paula Chambers is an artist, academic and arts educator. She has exhibited widely including Shoplifting at Woolworths: And Other Acts of Material Disobedience at Barnsley Civic, West Yorkshire. Paula is Subject Leader for Sculpture on BA(Hons) Fine Art at Leeds Arts University and has presented at national and international conferences on feminism, contemporary art and the domestic. She has chapters published in Feminist Visual Activism and the Body, and in Feminist Art Activisms and Artivisms, and has had articles published in Performance/Research Journal (special issue On The Maternal) and in JourMS.

Paula Chambers is kunstenaar, academica en kunsteducator. Ze heeft veel tentoongesteld, waaronder Shoplifting at Woolworths: And Other Acts of Material Disobedience in Barnsley Civic, West Yorkshire. Paula is vakdocent beeldhouwen in de BA(Hons) Fine Art aan de Leeds Arts University en heeft presentaties gegeven op nationale en internationale conferenties over feminisme, hedendaagse kunst en het huiselijke. Ze heeft hoofdstukken gepubliceerd in Feminist Visual Activism and the Body, en in Feminist Art Activisms and Artivisms, en er zijn artikelen van haar gepubliceerd in Performance/Research Journal (special issue On The Maternal) en in JourMS.
